Mount Meru

Tanzania's second-highest peak — a dramatic volcanic crater offering spectacular views of Kilimanjaro and excellent acclimatisation trekking.

About This Destination

Mount Meru rises to 4,562 metres directly above Arusha, making it Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of the most scenic trekking destinations in East Africa. The mountain is a massive stratovolcano with a spectacular collapsed crater forming a perfect crescent around the summit. The 3-4 day trekking route through Arusha National Park is often used for acclimatisation before a Kilimanjaro summit attempt, but it is increasingly popular as a standalone trekking objective. The mountain passes through diverse ecosystems: fig forest at the base, moorland in the middle zones, and alpine desert near the summit. Wildlife including buffalo, elephant, giraffe, and colobus monkeys can be encountered on the lower slopes. The summit view of Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds at dawn is considered one of the finest mountain vistas in Africa.
