What type of aircraft is used for the fly-in?▾
Light aircraft commonly used on Northern Circuit safari flights include the Cessna Caravan (14 seats), Cessna 206 (6 seats), and Pilatus PC-12 (9 seats). All operators are licensed by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority. Flights are scenic and low-altitude — typically 2,000–4,000 feet — offering spectacular views of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and the landscapes below.
How much luggage can I bring on the flight?▾
Weight limits on light aircraft are strict: 15 kg total luggage per person in a soft bag (no hard cases). This includes carry-on items. Excess luggage can be stored at your Arusha hotel and collected on return. We strongly recommend packing light for any fly-in safari itinerary. A standard safari wardrobe for a week fits easily within 15 kg in a soft duffel bag.
Is the flight scenic?▾
Yes the flights are among the highlights of the safari. Flying low over the Serengeti plains, spotting wildlife below, crossing the dramatic Ngorongoro highlands, and landing at a remote bush airstrip is a genuine safari experience in itself. Window seats are available on all aircraft. Many guests rate the flight as one of their favourite moments of the entire trip.
What is the flight time from Arusha?▾
Flight times from Arusha: Seronera (Central Serengeti) approximately 40 minutes; Kogatende (Northern Serengeti) approximately 50–55 minutes; Ngorongoro/Manyara approximately 20–25 minutes. These are direct flights with no stops. Multiple daily departures operate from Arusha Airport (ARK).
Is the return journey also by flight?▾
This depends on the specific itinerary. Some packages fly in and drive back via Ngorongoro (the most common combination), others fly both ways. The itinerary page specifies which legs are by flight and which are overland. Flying both ways costs approximately $280–380pp extra but maximises time at the destination. Ask us to customise.
What happens if the flight is cancelled due to weather?▾
Light aircraft flights occasionally cancel due to poor visibility or severe weather. In these situations, we immediately arrange a ground transfer alternative so your safari is not disrupted. This is uncommon Arusha and the Serengeti have excellent flying weather for most of the year. Our operations team monitors conditions daily and communicates proactively.
Can I charter a private aircraft rather than scheduled flights?▾
Yes private charter flights can be arranged for your group exclusively. A private charter from Arusha to Seronera costs approximately $800–1,200 depending on aircraft type and group size. For groups of 4+ guests, private charter is often comparable in cost to scheduled seats and offers more flexibility on departure times. Ask us for a charter quote.
