A stunning 80-metre waterfall on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, reached via a beautiful hike through Chagga coffee farms and montane forest.
Materuni Waterfalls is one of Tanzania’s most beautiful and accessible natural attractions — an impressive 80-metre cascade tumbling off the southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro into a lush natural pool. The falls are reached via a scenic 2-3 hour guided hike from the Chagga village of Materuni, passing through banana plantations, coffee farms, and montane forest.
The hike is suitable for all fitness levels and does not require any specialist equipment. Alongside the waterfalls, the Materuni experience includes a guided coffee tour — visitors observe the full Tanzanian arabica coffee production process from cherry picking and fermentation to drying and roasting, concluding with a traditional cup of locally grown and hand-processed coffee.
A Chagga lunch at a local homestead rounds out one of the most authentic cultural and natural experiences available as a day trip from Arusha. Materuni is located approximately 1.5 hours from Arusha and is commonly added as a final day to Northern Circuit camping safaris.
