The Machame Route 6-Day, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is favored for its diverse landscapes, excellent acclimatization profile, and high summit success rate.
This route approaches the mountain from the south, passing through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit zones. Trekkers enjoy iconic highlights such as the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and Barafu Camp before attempting the summit at Uhuru Peak.
The 6-day version is slightly more challenging than longer routes due to less acclimatization time, but it is ideal for fit climbers seeking a shorter yet rewarding Kilimanjaro adventure.

Leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone. Trek up a steep ridge with stunning views, reaching Shira Camp on the plateau. Enjoy views of Kibo Peak and surrounding landscapes.
Altitude: 3,840m → 4,600m → 3,960m
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours

Altitude: 3,960m → 4,640m
Distance: 9–10 km
Hiking Time: 7–9 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Start the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble offering incredible views. After reaching the top, continue through the Karanga Valley and join the Mweka trail junction before ascending to Barafu Camp.
Arrive at Barafu Camp in the afternoon, where you will rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. This is your final base camp before reaching the summit.
Altitude: 4,640m → 5,895m → 3,100m
Distance: 17 km
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Habitat: Arctic → Rainforest
Your summit attempt begins around midnight. Trek slowly through the darkness toward Stella Point on the crater rim. From there, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight. This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek.
Altitude: 3,100m → 1,829m
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. The trail can be muddy and slippery, so trekking poles are recommended.
At the gate, receive your summit certificate and celebrate your successful climb before transferring back to your hotel.
