Route Overview

The Shira Route 7-Day Kilimanjaro trek is a beautiful and adventurous route that begins on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro at the high-altitude Shira Gate. Unlike other routes that start in the rainforest, the Shira Route begins directly on the Shira Plateau, offering wide open views, remote wilderness, and a quieter trekking experience.

This route is ideal for trekkers who want a scenic Kilimanjaro climb with fewer crowds, dramatic landscapes, and excellent views of the mountain’s western slopes. The trail crosses the Shira Plateau, continues toward Lava Tower for acclimatization, joins the southern circuit through Barranco and Karanga, then reaches Barafu Camp before the final summit attempt.

Although the Shira Route is rewarding, it begins at around 3,500 meters, so good fitness and proper acclimatization are important. With experienced guides, steady pacing, and a well-planned itinerary, the 7-day Shira Route offers a strong chance to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1
Shira Gate to Shira 1 Camp
⛰ 3505m

Altitude: 3,500m to 3,505m
Distance: 4–5 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland

Your adventure begins with a drive from Arusha to the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, reaching Shira Gate at around 3,500 meters. Unlike other routes, the trek starts high on the expansive Shira Plateau.

After registration, begin a gentle trek across open moorland with stunning panoramic views. The landscape is wide, quiet, and less crowded, offering a true wilderness experience. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp for dinner and overnight.

2
Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
⛰ 3840m

Altitude: 3,505m to 3,840m
Distance: 7–8 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland

Today you cross the vast Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic areas on Kilimanjaro. The trek is relatively gentle, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude.

Enjoy breathtaking views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding volcanic landscape. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp, where you can take a short acclimatization walk before dinner.

3
Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
⛰ 3960m

Altitude: 3,840m to 4,600m (Lava Tower) → 3,960m
Distance: 10–12 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert

This is a key acclimatization day. Trek steadily up to the famous Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation standing at 4,600 meters.

After lunch, descend to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy greatly improves acclimatization and increases summit success chances. Barranco Camp sits beneath the impressive Barranco Wall with stunning views.

4
Barranco to Karanga Camp
⛰ 4035m

Altitude: 3,960m to 4,035m
Distance: 5–6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert

Start the day by climbing the iconic Barranco Wall. Although it looks intimidating, it is a non-technical scramble and one of the most exciting parts of the trek.

After reaching the top, continue through ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp. The shorter trekking day helps with acclimatization and recovery.

5
Karanga to Barafu Camp
⛰ 4640m

Altitude: 4,035m to 4,640m
Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert

Today’s trek leads to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. The terrain becomes more rugged and exposed, with incredible views of the mountain.

Arrive early, have lunch, and spend the afternoon resting and preparing for the summit push. An early dinner is served before going to sleep for a few hours.

6
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
⛰ 5895m

Altitude: 4,640m → 5,895m → 3,100m
Distance: 17 km
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Habitat: Arctic → Rainforest

Around midnight, begin your summit attempt under the stars. Trek slowly and steadily to Stella Point, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight. This is the longest and most challenging day of the trek.

7
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
⛰ 1829m

Altitude: 3,100m to 1,829m
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. The trail can be muddy and slippery, so trekking poles are helpful.

At the gate, receive your summit certificate and celebrate your successful Kilimanjaro climb before transferring back to your hotel.
